Going through even the most amicable divorce is a life-changing event that can leave even well-rounded individuals feeling lost and alone. Recovering from the pain and upheaval that inevitably occurs when a marriage ends is a process that can take years to work through. When my first marriage ended, I struggled to rebuild my life, feeling like everything I had worked for and all of my plans for the future were for naught. I began to question everything, my career path, my friends, my hobbies; everything.

Divorce support groups are an invaluable source of healing and help. They facilitate the process of working through the pain and uncertainty of divorce or separation with empathetic peers who understand. They offer the opportunity to discuss and learn more about self-care, anger management, stress reduction, and the many other issues that can occur when a marriage ends. Spending time with others who have been or are going through the process of divorce helps build a sense of community and relieve feelings of loneliness and depression. Working with others to come to terms with the pain of the past can help provide the pathway for looking forward to a future filled with happiness and love.

The journey through divorce or separation does not have to be a solitary endeavor. In my experience, being surrounded by sympathetic family and friends brought comfort, but also a feeling that they couldn’t truly understand what I was feeling. Having a supportive group of peers who understood made all the difference in the world.
