Many regulators have been clamoring recently about what they feel have been less than honest annuity marketing tactics employed by financial planners and insurance companies in order to get fearful investors to fork over their life savings in return for risky products that didn’t suit their objectives. Specifically, they are targeting sellers of so-called ‘variable annuities’ for misrepresenting the amount of exposure these products have to the financial markets overall and to the equity markets in particular.

The recent elimination of trillions of dollars in global net worth includes hundreds of billions dollars invested in index funds by insurance companies seeking moderate long-term returns on the principle they are given in return for a steady flow of annuity payments. As global equity markets have plummeted to their lowest point in over ten years, regulators fear that much of the principle that is supposed to repaid over the course of the annuity is lost, and that – as a result – insurers a) won’t be able to cover the payments and that b) in the case of variable payments, those depending on annuities as a primary source of income will not be able to make ends meet with payments that have in some cases fallen by as much as 50%.

Yet it is unclear just who is in the wrong here, if anyone, or if regulators are rattling their sabers in a concession to public pressure. Except in cases of outright fraud, investors are expected to have carefully read and understood all the prospectuses, all of which also include information necessary to make informed decisions about whether or not to purchase an annuity.  Yet since so many of the buyers of annuities are older and have difficulty understanding (let alone reading) much, they could be easily convinced by a salesperson saying something that totally contradicts the acknowledgement of risks found in the sales literature.

The case against variable annuity sales is compelling when we consider the demographic of the victims – mostly older people or either know nothing about personal finance or do not have the wherewithal to manage their own finances at all. Yet should we let a couple of bad apples ruin it all? Guidelines governing annuity marketing already dictate that a variety of investor-aimed disclosures must be made in order for a sale to proceed; in cases where that is not adhered to, the crime is fraud, and it should be pursued as such.

Savers and investors should always know exactly what they are getting into and should buy financial services from individuals they trust. They should verify all claims made by a salesman by referring to sales materials and should feel justified – compelled, even – to alert the authorities should they find that a salesperson is misrepresenting the risks that concur with variable annuities.

Fluorescent lights offer affordable gardening opportunities, turning any inside room into a suitable environment for plants so that you can enjoy fresh vegetables all year round. As food prices continue to skyrocket, more and more consumers are growing their own food in simple inside operations, getting the most out of their space.

10 to 15 percent more efficient than a metal halide light, fluorescent grow light and HPS bulbs are best used as supplemental light, ideal for plants that flower. Fluorescent grow lights are ideal for growing seedlings, although several can be combined at once in order to grow larger plants.

Standard fluorescent and HPS bulbs emit a blue spectrum light, which can make a plant grow too leggy during its vegetative stage. This is similar to the sunlight at midday and is ideal for flower growth. Enhanced performance HPS lights, however, emit a wider blue spectrum, enhancing the plants’ growth significantly. It leads to a fuller, healthier plant.

Bulbs should be hung high enough in order to not negatively impact the growth of the plants. The higher the lamp wattage is, the hotter the lamp will be, so hanging the lights too close to the plants can burn the vegetation and dry out the soil. A light hanger makes it easy to adjust the length of the light, allowing you to vary it according to the growth and height of the plant.

Plants need different periods of light depending on the type of plant. Most require 12 hours of light, although some long day plants may require 16 hours. A timer is most effective at rationing the right amount of light. It saves you the trouble of having to remember to turn the lights on and off, and also allows you to take vacations or leave growing operations for several days while you are away.

Bulbs should be replaced before they burn out, generally every 1 to 2 ½ years, depending on how many hours per day you run the light. Older lamps may look fine, but their performance deteriorates considerably and the plants will suffer. Even after a year of use, an HPS bulb generally only produces light 85 to 90 percent as effectively, and continues to depreciate after that. Keeping bulbs fresh will have a dramatic affect on your plants’ growth.

Why limit your green thumb to nice weather and the traditional growing season? Indoor lights allow you to enjoy gardening throughout the year, continually reaping in a harvest of fresh vegetables.

As the owner of a 300-employee business in Santa Monica, finding a local partner to develop my business’s network was important because I knew that a Southern California-based ISP would provide me with the best service at competitive prices. While Wireless last-mile technology in an urban environment may be counterintuitive, the convenience and low cost literally made it impossible not to buy laptops for any employees who wanted them – a promise that I know is likely to pay off by making them more productive at their work.

Bottom line: when planning your network infrastructure and IT solutions, talk to a local partner who deals with lots of small businesses like yours and won’t implement a cookie-cutter corporate solution. Doing so for my business saved us a bundle and gave me the confidence that our network and infrastructure is safe with a partner who has my best interests at heart.
